Description Of the WayThe West Highland Way, Scotlands first long distance footpath, was opened in October 1980. Since then it has become a justifiably popular walk passing through some of Scotland's most beautiful and varied scenery. Generally the walking is a challenge as opposed to arduous, the way is clear and well-maintained, and if a sharp lookout is kept for the small unobtrusive waymarks, it is difficult to get totally lost. Starting the Way at Milngavie (pronounced "mill guy")
in the North West of Glasgow and walking the 95 miles to Fort William
is the preferred direction. This offers the dual advantage of having the
sun on one's back and also allows the walker to acclimatize gently over
the easier southern sections before tackling the more rugged northern
hills. |

| Group Pace Adjustments
The daily finishing points are not fixed and will vary with group pace and experience. if the group has a strong pace some "Munro Bagging" at Ben Lomond and Ben Nevis will help slow the very fit. Seven days walking will suit the slowest of groups. Munro Bagging is the term given to climbing scottish mountains
over 3000 feet in height. The highest and most famous of these is Ben
Nevis. |
